If living in Downtown San Diego is at the top of your list, there’s definitely a neighborhood that offers the right lifestyle fit for you!

Gaslamp Quarter

The buzzing center of activity, this neighborhood is the most well-known central city hub and is constantly alive with a mecca of cultural events, festivals, performing arts, restaurants, shopping, tourism and vivacious nightlife. A quick trip to the surrounding communities of Little Italy and the East Village are a simple walk, bike, or trolley ride away.  The Gaslamp Quarter offers many night clubs for evening entertainment such as the Fluxx and Hard Rock Hotel Nightclubs that often attract celebrities to the hotspots of the newly revived San Diego Downtown.  This area is always filled with tourists during the day visiting the many shops and restaurants as well as the Convention Center attendees.  At night, streets are filled with people walking down 5th Street, enjoying dinner on restaurant patios and watching the crowds as they come dressed up for a night in the bars and nightclubs.

Cortez Hill

Resting up on the hill apart from its dynamic neighbors, this quiet community offers the most suburban feel with fewer pedestrians, and wider residential streets and easy access to freeways. Cortez Hill looms over Downtown and Balboa Park making it easy for residents to maneuver between the two communities.  It features the historic Cortez Hill Hotel that has been renovated to Condominiums and offers small cafes at the foot of the building.  This area would be the quietest area for residents to choose that want to be close to downtown but feel more secluded  from the busy feel of the other areas.

Little Italy

A little taste of Italy is literally what you’ll get with this intimate neighborhood known for it’s delectable Italian delicatessens, restaurants, side-walk cafes, flourishing art scene, and one of city’s most popular Farmer’s Markets. The San Diego bay is just around the corner which is great for those seeking a pedestrian friendly locale away from city streets.  With the opening of new restaurants such as Prep Kitchen and new wine bars, this area perfect for evening entertainment and art walks during Kettner nights events.  The Little Italy District does not have any night clubs so most of the night life quiets down around 11pm.  It is the perfect area for the busy professional to have an evening drink and great dinner at one of the Italian food restaurants with life music playing in the background and still enjoy the quiet streets in the late hours of the night.

 Columbia District

Home to the San Diego Museum of Contemporary Art, this sophisticated neighborhood boasts exclusive high-rise residential properties with dramatic views of the city.  An easy walk to the San Diego/Coronado Ferry, and Santa Fe Train Depot, local citizens can also take advantage of the nearby bike and pedestrian paths that span the harbor, stretching all the way to Point Loma.  The Columbia District is currently under re-development of the North Embarcadero Visionary Plan that will include public art displays, tree groves and open spaces.  The recent completion of the new public park offers water fountain for kids to play in and public open space for picnics as well as the addition of parking structures offering more than 800 parking spots.  The recent plans for new building structures filling the skyline including a new hotel with many shops below and two new high end condominium high rises, this area is sure to attract many tourist and bring life to a quieter part of the Downtown District.

Marina District

The Embarcadero, Seaport Village, and bayside San Diego Convention Center are all neatly situated in this centrally located downtown community. Local residents can take-in sweeping bay views of the Marina, or skip on over to the Gaslamp Quarter for convenient shopping at the Horton Plaza Mall, or to simply enjoy the energizing nightlife and gourmet dining nearby.  The remodel of the historic San Diego Police Department headquarters located in the Seaport Village offers many restaurants including the Cheesecake Factory and many centric shops alongside the tourist shops already present in Seaport Village.  This District is known for it’s high end condominium high rises offering many amenities including a 24 hour concierge, pool, sauna and steam room.

East Village

Comprised of 130 city blocks this is the largest and fastest growing downtown community. Located just east of the Gaslamp Quarter this neighborhood is home to Petco Park, the official major league baseball park of the San Diego Padres. The park is a major social hub offering the perfect gathering site for family and friends. Locals often enjoy picnics, baseball games, concerts and other social events on the vast ballpark grounds. Filled with luxury hotels, restaurants, roof-top bars, cafes, boutiques, art galleries and live music venues, this town is filled with vibrant progressive energy.  Since the opening of the baseball park, many restaurants and bars have opened their doors and flourished the downtown area from when the Gaslamp District was the only place for entertainment.  Condominium Complexes in this area are styled more of a contemporary rustic style featuring vaulted ceilings with cement walls and loft style units.  There are many rustic feel bars that get filled up quickly for baseball games during the baseball season to join the locals and watch the games.
